What is a museum? Since 1946, ICOM has been proposing several definitions of museum that reflect different concepts of museum, its role in the society, its relationship with the public or the art market. In 2019, ICOM launched an international call for a new definition. The debates that were raised around the call, and the many different new definitions that have been proposed all over the world, provide a very interesting insight on how museums are conceived in present society and their possible development.
