From the mid-Nineteenth century, as Pompeii gained new attention thanks to the most recent archaeological discoveries, more and more documentary materials circulated in the artistic field. An unpublished letter by Giacinto Gigante to Eleuterio Pagliano, containing a sketch of the calidarium of the women’s section of Pompeii’s Terme Stabiane, clarifies how, as photography was increasingly used as iconographic source, drawing still remained a precious resource for modern artists as part of the genesis of their work, as well as a fundamental tool for exchanges and contacts across the national and international art scene.
