«Parlare ad essi con linguaggio
appropriato a pittori, a scultori, a
decoratori». L’insegnamento della
Storia dell’arte all’Accademia di Brera: la
docenza di Giulio Carotti (1902-1922).
Edoardo Sala
This essay reconstructs the professorship of Giulio Carotti (1902–1922), who taught art history at the
Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera during a period of transition between the nineteenth-century academic
tradition and the university-based discipline inaugurated by his successor, Eva Tea. Drawing on archival
sources, teaching programmes, and Carotti’s own illustrated manuals for Hoepli, the study examines his
demonstrative method — grounded in photographs, lantern slides, casts, and museum visits — situating
his Milanese teaching within the broader national and international emergence of art history as an
academic field, alongside figures such as Adolfo Venturi.
