Maria Barbara Guerrieri Borsoi
The article investigates the changes made in 1634-35 by the Roman confraternity of the Santissima Concezione to its chapel located in the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso. With the support of many new documents, the article clarifies the original layout, which subsequently has been much altered, and emphasizes the pictorial contribution of Pietro da Cortona as well as his close supervision on the stucco sculptors who decorated the chapel, with particular regard to Iacopo Antonio Fancelli and Giovanni Vinciglia. Also are mentioned the skilled craftsmen who worked in the rich sacellum and realized some ephemeral works, including a wooden “talamo” by Pietro Paolo Giorgetti, which was made for the festival organized during the relocation of the icon of Virgin Mary on its renewed altar.
