The essay is an ample, and richly illustrated survey of the iconography of Saint Joseph, Jesus’s “father” and Mary’s spouse in European art of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Constants and variables in the evolution of Joseph’s iconography are discussed and documented, according both to geographical an chronological models and trends.
