La Storia dell’arte come disciplina identitaria della cultura in Italia nell’ambito degli studi dell’Alta Formazione Artistica. La sua ridefinizione nei nuovi SAD del
comparto AFAM e prospettive future
Giovanna Cassese
This essay traces Art History’s identity as a discipline born within the Fine Arts Academies, from Vasari’s
foundational role in Florence through Bellori, Winckelmann and beyond, and reconstructs its parallel,
distinct development within the Italian higher education system. It argues that AFAM institutions require
an art-historical pedagogy attentive to complexity, integrating iconography, technique, and the social
systems of production, patronage and reception, rather than narrowly monographic or philological
approaches. The essay then examines the recent redefinition of the artistic-disciplinary sectors (SAD) within
the AFAM system, positioning Art History as central to safeguarding and interpreting Academy heritage.
It closes by considering future prospects, including doctoral programs and restoration schools, and by
affirming Art History’s civic and political relevance for Italian cultural identity.
