La novella dell’Aquila d’oro come fonte iconografica per nove placchette inedite e alcuni cofanetti degli Embriachi
Benedetta Chiesi
This paper focuses on nine newly rediscovered bone plaques that can be ascribed to the Bottega degli Embriachi and dated at the end of the fourteenth century. Once again, the connection between images and narrative sources in the Embriachi workshop will be discussed. The previously unpublished nine reliefs, not studied before, illustrate the popular Tuscan novel Aquila d’oro. The article connects them with another small group of bone plaques having the same iconography, as well as with the panels once in the Certosa di Pavia, made for the Duke of Milan. The aim of the analysis is to establish a corpus and investigate how the Bottega used this novel and chose its more relevant episodes.
