This article offers new reflections on Neapolitan painting collections in the first half of the XVII century.
Naples appears as a city of extraordinary cultural vitality, where collecting was not an exclusive prerogative of the aristocracy. The real protagonists were men of letters, merchants, bankers, foreign residents
and recently ennobled families arisen to highest government positions, who were all responsible for the
rapid evolution of taste in art collecting and for the consolidation of the relations between local culture
and external influences.
