The dramatic situation affecting Central Italy, struck by a series of major earthquakes, has exposed once again our country’s vulnerability. Many museums have been badly damaged, their collections removed and cultural activities cancelled. Italy needs a deeper risk consciousness in order to assess human impact on natural environment, and a new protection model. Cultural heritage risk assessment is the right way to prevent major damages and to face the “residual risk”, emergencies. Museums risk management asks for the cooperation of museum professionals at all levels. The fundamental “Piano di Sicurezza ed Emergenza Museale” (Museum Risk Management and Emergency Plan) is not yet implemented as it should be. Italian museums are closely related to their territory. As the “Siena Charter” states, when museums are involved in the management and care of their cultural landscape, they can become a strength as regional offices for active protection of cultural heritage
