«e dietro alle spalle loro, per campo, fece alcune spalliere di rosai»: precisazioni sui perduti affreschi riferiti a Stefano da Verona in San Francesco a Mantova
Roberta Delmoro
The essay starts out from a review of Calzolari’s photos of the ancient (and lost) chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, in the church of Saint Francis in Mantua, before the bombings in 1945. The photos, which immortalize several details of the lost frescos, painted on the vault of the chapel, induce me to modify an old proposal as to the iconography of some saints of the late Gothic period and prompt me to propose a new attribution for these paintings, up until then attributed to Stefano da Verona. The essay also makes new reflections on Stefano da Verona’s painting production, with stylistic analysis and some new proposals of attribution.
